2005 NFL Strength of Schedule Rankings - Regular Season Win/Loss Record

Hindsight - Updated: April 10, 2005

Every fantasy football season, the one aspect that most owners overlook at draft time is a player’s strength of schedule. This statistic can help identify which players will have an easy road in 2005, and which will have an uphill climb.

Defenses change from year-to-year but generally the teams with the worst records give up the most points. Therefore, having players who play more of these teams in the following year have a "weaker" schedule, which is always an advantage for your fantasy team.

Each team's strength of schedule was determined by using their opponents' combined total record from the previous year. Players on the higher ranking teams should be drafted above players of similar quality who play for the teams who scored lower on the list.

NFL Strength of Schedule Rankings Index | Passing Defense | Rushing Defense | Win / Loss Record

Extremely Soft

Players on these teams should have an easier time putting up the points. Focus on those NFC West teams as their players should rack up the points this year.

Team Division 2005 Opponents' Combined 2004 Record
  1.  St. Louis Rams

NFC West

114-142
  2.  Arizona Cardinals NFC West 115-141
  3.  Philadelphia Eagles NFC East 117-139
  4.  Seattle Seahawks NFC West 124-132
  5. Washington Redskins NFC East 119-137
  6.  San Francisco 49ers NFC West 120-136

Still Pretty Easy

These teams should cruise some weeks and flounder in others.  Keep an eye out for players from the NFC East and North but be a little wary of the NFC South as they have to play the AFC East.

Team Division 2005 Opponents' Combined 2004 Record
7 Dallas Cowboys NFC East 122-134
T-8.  Chicago Bears NFC North 123-133
T-8.  Minnesota Vikings NFC North 123-133
T-10.  Detroit Lions NFC North 125-131
T-10.  New York Giants NFC East 125-131
T-12. Carolina Panthers NFC South 126-130
T-12.  New Orleans Saints NFC South 126-130
T-12.  Tampa Bay Buccaneers NFC South 126-130
T-12.  Tennessee Titans AFC South 126-130
  16.  Green Bay Packers NFC North 127-129
  17.  Atlanta Falcons NFC South 128-128

Getting Difficult

A tough voyage all season long as their opponents' combined records are greater than .500, but strong players can weather the storms.  Be warned about players from the AFC South divisions, although they do have cushy games against the weak NFC West.

Team Division 2005 Opponents' Combined 2004 Record
T-18.  Houston Texans AFC South 129-127
T-18.  Indianapolis Colts AFC South 129-127
T-18.  Jacksonville Jaguars AFC South 129-127
   21.  Pittsburgh Steelers AFC North 130-126

Ouch!

No easy games here according to last year standings.   No real surprises, except that all 10 teams are from the AFC.   The AFC East and West divisions have particularly hard schedules as they have to play each other in 2005.

Team Division 2005 Opponents' Combined 2004 Record

T-22.  Denver Broncos AFC West 134-122
T-24.  Cleveland Browns AFC North 135-121
T-24.  Oakland Raiders AFC West 135-121
T-26.  Baltimore Ravens AFC North 136-120
T-26.  Buffalo Bills AFC East 136-120
T-28.  Kansas City Chiefs AFC West 137-119
T-28.  New York Jets AFC East 137-119
  30.  New England Patriots AFC East 138-118
  31.  San Diego Chargers AFC West 139-117
  32.  Miami Dolphins AFC East 140-116
