Keyshawn Johnson Moves to Dallas - The Fantasy Implications

StingRay - March 26, 2004

What a year Keyshawn Johnson had in Tampa Bay.  After winning the Super Bowl in 2002 nothing went right for Keyshawn and the Buccaneers organization.  The Bucs finished with a disappointing 7-9 record and did not make a trip to the playoffs.  The relationship between Keyshawn and coach Jon Gruden was so incompatible that Keyshawn was deactivated after week 11.  Johnson finished the season with career lows in receptions (45) and receiving yards (600).  He was a complete bust if you drafted him last year.

Well Keyshawn has finally gotten his way and he is reunited with his favorite coach Bill Parcells. The Keyshawn for Joey Galloway move helps Dallas get the big possession receiver they so desperately needed.  Is Keyshawn worth taking in your fantasy draft?  I believe so and here’s why...

1. Something to Prove - I personally have never been a Keyshawn supporter because he has a very big mouth and fantasy-wise he has not been that productive. Keyshawn is a very good possession receiver but he’s not among the elite receivers in the game even though he will tell you differently.  His ego took a shot when he was deactivated so he will go into this season trying to prove his critics wrong about how productive he can be.

2. Bill Parcells - Even while he was a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Keyshawn stated on numerous occasions that Parcells was the best coach that he had ever had.  Parcells orchestrated the deal to bring Keyshawn to Dallas so Johnson will do everything he can to please his new coach. Bill Parcells is a master motivator so he will challenge Keyshawn to return to the form he had a few years ago.

3. Throw Me the Damn Ball - The two egos of Gruden and Johnson clashed so much that I believe Gruden was reluctant to call Keyshawn’s number on many occasions, especially in the red zone.  In Dallas, Keyshawn will get the damn ball because the Cowboys need a go-to receiver and a big target near the red zone. The three years Parcells and Johnson spent together in New York Keyshawn scored 23 touchdowns. The last three seasons in Tampa Bay Keyshawn has only reached the end zone 9 times.  I have a feeling that Keyshwan may score close to 9 touchdowns this season.

Like I stated earlier I have never been a fan of Keyshawn but I believe his personality and his lackluster fantasy performance the past few seasons makes Keyshawn a nice sleeper in your fantasy draft.  If you could pick him up as your 3rd or 4th receiver he could pay big dividends.
