The
Sandman's 2006 Quarterback Sleepers
August
8, 2006
|
Here at the freaks I
like to break down the keepers into three
categories;
(1)
Sleeper -
someone who in most years would normally be drafted,
but on most fantasy teams he would be a backup.
However this year he is worth starting every week.
An example from last year would be Carson Palmer.
(2)
Deep Sleeper -
someone who is generally known but this is the year
that they step up or bounce back. Rookies also fall
into this category but only someone who was drafted
outside the first round. An example of this last
year would be LaMont Jordan.
(3)
Rip Van Winkle -
an unknown player or a backup that by the end of the
season everyone will wish that they had them on
their team. An example from last year would be
Samkon Gado. |

Sleeper – Jake Delhomme (Carolina Panthers)
It is amazing to me that Delhomme continues to fly under the
radar in most leagues but he always does. He has a
chance to be a top three quarterback but he will probably be
the eighth or ninth quarterback selected. In each of
the last three seasons he has passed for 20 TD’s and 3,000+
yards. Steve Smith is one of the best receivers in the
league and now the Panthers have a solid No.2 in Keyshawn
Johnson. A healthy DeShaun Foster will force teams to
respect the run and this year the Panthers used their first
pick on DeAngelo Williams to cover of them in case of
injury.
Deep Sleeper – Jon Kitna (Detroit
Lions)
The Lions will be a totally different offensive team this
year for one reason, Mike Martz. Officially Kitna is
competing with Josh McCown for the starting job but there is
no way McCown will win the job. The Lions have three first
round receivers, Roy Williams, Mike Williams and Charles
Rogers. While Roy Williams has shown flashes, none of them
have done too much but they are all talented and I think
that Martz won’t put up with any crap. Add to that the
fact that Kitna threw for 3,591 yards and 26 touchdowns the
last time he was a starter.
Rip Van Winkle – David Garrard
(Jacksonville Jaguars)
Garrard is the best backup in the league. During the
off-season, at least half-dozen teams called the Jaguars
about Garrard’s availability. The Jaguars were smart to keep
Garrard as starter Byron Leftwich has never played an entire
season. Garrard played so well last year that many NFL
scouts think that he should be the starter. That won’t
happen but don’t be surprised if at some point Garrard is
starting.
